FORT GORDON, Ga. (Feb. 16, 2017) -- Service members at Fort Gordon, Georgia, now have access to a new contraption for conducting physical training.
The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation recently added two mobile fitness units to its equipment collection. Each steel unit measures 6.5 feet by 6.5 feet wide by 8 feet high. Units are equipped with all the gear needed to train including retractable swing-out racks, flat benches, pull-up bars, and dip bars. A four-tier center-mounted storage console makes it easy to store and transport kettlebells, dumbbells, weights, and medicine balls; all of which are included in the MFU.
Setup is easy and doesn't require any tools.
"This is a very well put together functional mobile unit," said Josh Woody, Gordon Fitness Center assistant manager and fitness coordinator. "It's kind of like a mini station where you can incorporate regular circuit workouts or CrossFit workouts."
The idea for acquiring the units date back to 2015 when Col. Samuel Anderson, then garrison commander at Fort Gordon, was looking for ways to enhance and encourage fitness among the community.
"Col. Anderson heard the words 'mobile fitness,' and that's when it started, so he turned it over to me, I looked into it, and we found this particular entity," said Randy Taylor, DFMWR fitness director.
The MFU's are currently being housed at MWR Sports and Fitness, Building 24501, on 25th Street, and are available to units for use up to one week at a time. There is no cost to sign out the unit.
Taylor said they plan to eventually be able to accommodate units by transporting and delivering MFU's to units' across the installation.
"It's a two-man operation to get the equipment moved, and we don't have the staff to do it," Taylor said. "Once we get staffed back up, we'll have it to where we'll mobilize them out in the areas.
In the meantime, units can check the key out on site and use them on the property.
"Whoever is in charge of that unit will come get the key, sign for it, unlock it, and they're responsible for everything in the (MFU) and for instructing," Taylor said.
Taylor and Woody agreed the MFU's are great additions to the installation and hope to see units take advantage of them. Not only are they convenient, but they're a great alternative to conducting PT inside fitness centers.
"Being spring and summertime, with the beautiful weather, some people don't like to go into the gym, so it's awesome for a unit to come out there and run some PT," Woody said. "Randy did a great job at finding something that incorporates fitness all into one."
