BASTOGNE, Belgium --An international march in a solemn tribute to the thousands of Soldiers that lost their lives during the Battle of the Bulge took place here Dec. 10.

The Battle of the Bulge was fought from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945.

"A lot of soldiers and civilians aren't completely aware of what The Battle of the Bulge is, so I loved using the time it took to march the route to explain the history and significance behind the battle," said Sgt. Marcos Castillo, a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialist, 66th Transportation Company.

Bastogne holds the march annually. Participants can choose to march seven, 13, or 20 kilometers. Volunteers in full battle rattle are staged along the way as if it was WWII again. They positioned themselves in trenches and vehicles so marchers can ask historical questions. Volunteers also grill bratwurst and prepare beverages for the stopping points along the way.

Once finished, marchers receive a completion certificate.

"It was a special experience learning what the struggles the soldiers faced were and seeing how everything was set up, and how they had to live," said Pfc. Res Silik, supply specialist, 66th Transportation Company.
