U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan hosted Army Education Week, Nov. 14 -- 18, at the Yongsan Education Center. Field experts shared their successful stories and knowledge.

This year's theme is Army Continuing Education -- Investing in our Soldiers and Future. The primary goal is to provide maximum education opportunities for Soldiers and Families.

American Education Week is always the week before Thanksgiving. The campaign dates back nearly 100 years. American Legion veterans and the National Education Association started a combined project during World War I to assist draftees with their education. Due to the high percentage of illiteracy among draftees, the Legion and the NEA created Education Week.

The effort raised public awareness of the importance of education and, on Dec. 4, 1921, the first American Education Week began. In the following years, other government and private organizations joined the support as cosponsors.

"Our goal is to provide our Soldiers everything education needs so that they will have no problem in meeting their education goals," said Felecia Neal, the education services specialist at the Yongsan Education Center. Neal welcomed Soldiers and Families at the event. "We are here in celebration of American Education Week, and we have subject matter experts here today ready to give out necessary information and share their stories."
