ABERDEEN MD: Labor Day honors the accomplishments of American workers whose efforts and commitment make our nation great. No less committed are the Soldiers and Civilians of our Army who labor and sacrifice to ensure a free nation to work and live. This holiday we pause to truly appreciate and celebrate the American workforce and its indelible spirit, determination, innovation and productivity.

Labor Day also marks the traditional end of summer where outdoor activities and travel opportunities are still high. In the context of readiness and personal accountability, please take the necessary time to assess and reduce risks both on and off duty.

Please keep in mind that many of the Army's non-combat losses involve intentional self-destructive behavior. Leaders, friends, and co-workers must be alert to the warning signs when someone in our Army family needs intervention, help or simply someone to be there.

Also, local schools are back in session. Will ask for your assistance and awareness to distracted driving. Drivers, please also be mindful of children getting on or off school buses and crossing streets. Parents, walk the route your children take to and from school or bus stops and ensure that they know to use the crosswalks and how to avoid other hazards. If your children ride the bus, teach them to approach and depart school buses with caution and in plain view of the driver and to never walk behind or between buses.

In view of the hard work you do for CECOM and to help ensure the safety of those who may have travel plans, supervisors (subject to workload and other mission requirements) are delegated the authority to grant 59-minutes administrative leave/early release for our Department of the Army Civilian employees today,

2 September 2016.

Personal discipline coupled with a sense of responsibility for the safety of our APG Families can help us all have an enjoyable end-of-summer experience. Have a Happy and "Safe" Labor Day Weekend.
