FORT SILL, Okla., June 17, 2016 -- I feel a little silly talking about water activities since the last week has been a flood, nonetheless, here I am advocating for a few water facilities for you to enjoy this summer.
There are a slew of options on Fort Sill which makes it the perfect summer location for any of your watery needs. For those who live on post, there are options through the community centers, with two salt-water pools and a splash pad for adults and children. These are only available for those living on-post, but residents can bring guests with them.
For those living off-post, Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation provides a multitude of water options. You can get most of the information from their website (www.sill.ArmyMWR.com) but I wanted to highlight just a few of my favorites. At the top of the list is the spray park. I went last year because my son was too young for me to feel comfortable letting him run around the pool on his own. He was 1 year old at the time and the spray park was perfect for him. He ran around, wearing himself out for a great afternoon nap, and I could either run around with him or sit comfortably in the shade while he made new friends. The area is fenced with only one entrance/exit so I don't have to worry about him running away. He's free to be as wet and wild as he wants to be.
The spray park features many water spouts and fountains that children of all ages (my youngest is 2 now and the oldest is 10) will enjoy. My husband will deny it but he thinks it's fun, too. Despite its close proximity to the White Wolf Manor housing area, the park is not operated by Corvias but by FMWR, which means it's open to any ID card holder.
An extra tidbit I learned is that the spray park can be rented like many other items from the FWMR. It is closed Wednesdays but is available for rent. That's pretty cool. I don't know the cost but you can call 580-442-6175 for more information.
In addition there is Quinette Pool which is right behind the Patriot Club. This is a great pairing because if you're hungry (or thirsty?) you can get a snack from the Patriot Club. This summer the 77th Army Band will be having summer concerts in the clamshell next to the pool, making it an awesome summer activity. Relax in the waters while the sun sets, listening to some great music from a fantastic band (I may be biased).
The last option is probably the most popular -- the beach front at Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area. A while ago I wrote about getting a cabin on the lake which was affordable and fun. I plan to go back this summer and let the boys enjoy being by the beach, making s'mores and looking up at the stars. It's going be amazing.
Additionally, LETRA has movies on the beach throughout the summer. I don't normally write about things I haven't done, but I thought it would be good to at least let you know that the option is available. Their advertisement encourages you to bring a blanket and chair and enjoy a family-friendly movie while on the beach. The movies all follow the theme of "good vs. evil" and include movies such as "Ant-Man" (June 18) and "Avengers: Age of Ulton" (Aug. 20). The complete list can also be found on the website. Admission to the movie is free (my favorite part) and there will be concessions available for purchase. How fun is that? Make sure you bring some bug spray though!
So there you have it. Great summer water fun that doesn't include the river in your backyard that was created from heavy rains. So take off your galoshes and put on your swimsuit. Head to any of these great water spots and have some fun!
Oh! And remember water safety. Wear life vests when applicable and apply sunscreen. Skin cancer is no joke.
