ALEXANDRIA, Va. (June 15, 2016) -- Army Emergency Relief recently awarded 3,094 scholarships to children of active-duty and retired Soldiers, and 1,055 scholarships under the Spouse Education Assistance Program. This year's awards total $7.9 million.
"We believe that helping the children and spouses of Soldiers to continue their education greatly contributes to the financial well-being of the Army Family," said Tammy LaCroix, supervisor for AER's scholarship programs. "Obtaining a college degree increases the student's long-term earning potential and contributes to a more stable future."
AER scholarships are awarded to the children and Spouses of active duty and retired Soldiers based solely on financial need. Applications are accepted on AER's website, www.aerhw.org, each year between Jan. 1 January and May 1. instructions and requirements can be found on the website.
For 2015-2016, AER also awarded seven scholarships totaling $285,590 under the Pentagon Victims' Scholarship Fund which was established to provide undergraduate education assistance for children of Soldiers killed or severely wounded in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. The 2016-2017 scholarships will be awarded later this summer.
AER received a total of 7,685 applications for the 2016-2017 academic year, officials said. Of those who completed the application process and provided the required documentation, 83 percent received a scholarship award.
Army Emergency Relief is a private non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to Soldiers, active and retired, and their families. Since its incorporation in 1942, AER has provided more than $1.7 billion to more than 3.7 million Soldiers, families and retirees.
