BAUMHOLDER, Germany -- Employing basic military first aid skills, and a willingness to help others, two Soldiers rendered much-needed medical aid to a German motorcyclist here May 16.

The Soldiers, one from 16th Sustainment Brigade and one from 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery, arrived at the accident scene on their way home from work.

Maj. Jacob Meyer, 16th Sustainment Brigade Intelligence Officer, arrived first and asked the injured rider's seven fellow motorcyclists what he could do to assist.

Being a combat veteran, he carries an Improved First Aid Kit, known as an IFAK, and he used the kit's combat gauze to stop the motorcyclist's bleeding.

"I could see she was bleeding on the ground," said Meyer. "I pulled over, put on my hazards, grabbed my IFAK, and ran to her to asses her injuries."

By that time the second Soldier, Spc. Jordan Jaeschke, assigned to 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery, arrived.

"Spc. Jaeschke put his warning triangles to the rear and I put mine to the front to block the area," said Meyer.

Once German paramedics arrived, they immobilized her with a neck brace and stretcher, put her in an ambulance, and requested an emergency helicopter.

Maj. Meyer and Spc. Jaeschke remained there until the motorcyclist left in the helicopter.

Her fellow Germany motorcyclists thanked the Soldiers, who packed their warning triangles and continued home.

"It felt good to help the locals because if the roles were reversed they would help us," said Jaeschke. "It was second nature to help someone in need."
