FORT BENNING, Ga., (April 13, 2016) -- It is time again for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The event will start at 7 p.m. April 29 and end at 9 a.m. April 30. This year it will finish with a 5K Race. It will be held at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

All during this event people will walk to support families affected by cancer. Cancer touches the lives of everyone in the U.S. through a relative, friend or maybe being a survivor yourself.

For the military Family, the great thing about the American Cancer Society is that it is a portable resource to be taken from post to post. No matter where you are stationed, the ACS National Number 1-800-277-2345 connects you with information, day to day help and emotional support at no cost.

There is no cost for any of the following programs. Relay for Life is one of those fundraising activities. The programs funded include:

• Research - Georgia received $6.8 million dollars for research in years past.

• Road to Recovery - Local drivers volunteer their time to drive people to treatment if they do not have transportation. Drivers are trained and have background checks before driving.

• Reach To Recovery - This program matches volunteer breast cancer survivors to people facing breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. They offer support, answers to questions and hope.

• Look Good Feel Better Program - Volunteer licensed cosmetologists help women experiencing side effects from chemotherapy and radiation learn about make-up and appearance aids.

• Hope Lodge Program - There are 32 Hope Lodges across the country and another 6 under construction. The closest Hope Lodge is on the Emory University campus in Atlanta, Georgia. Hope Lodge is a residence facility for patients 18 years and older, plus one caregiver. The facility is available for anyone over 40 miles from home. If there is not a Hope Lodge in their area; ACS has hotel partners to provide lodging for them. Ronald McDonald Houses are for children under 18 years, plus a caregiver. Columbus has a Ronald McDonald House!

• National ACS Phone Line - This phone line is operational 24 hours a day seven days a week. Operators are there to answer all types of questions and link people to these programs plus more.

The ACS is here to help everyone across the United States. For that reason it is a great resource for the military family!
