NEMECINE, Lithuania - NATO soldiers from around the world came together Nov. 11, 2015 to commemorate members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty during a ceremony at General Aldolfas Romanauskas Warfare Training Center in Nemecine, Lithuania.

Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, officially marks the end of World War I to many countries. In 1918, hostilities ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Officiating the ceremony were members of the Canadian Armed Forces, who were on ground in Lithuania for Exercises Maple Arch and Iron Sword. Canadian troops played a major role in World War I, particularly in Europe, where they supported Allied forces. Add Explanation

"The date today corresponds not only with what Canada calls Remembrance Day, but also Armistice Day in the United Kingdom, Veterans Day in the United States and Independence Day in Poland," said Maj. Erica Fleck, a chief logistics director with the Canadian Armed Forces. "We gather today to honor the courage and devotion of the brave men and women who made the supreme sacrifice of dying for their country."

Representing the U.S. were Soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Armor Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. The 3rd Bn., 69th Armor Regt. Soldiers were led by their commander, Lt. Col. Johnny Evans, who said he was honored to participate in the ceremony.

"It's an honor to be able to represent our country and stand shoulder to shoulder with our Allies as we remember those that have fallen and gone before us," Evans said. "We are grateful for the opportunity and our Soldiers are always ready to represent our nation to the best of their ability."

Soldiers from the U.S. Army, Canadian Armed Forces, British Armed Forces, Ukrainian Ground Forces, Lithuanian Land Forces and Polish Armed Forces represented their respective countries during the ceremony.

The Remembrance Day ceremony included a formal wreathlaying and was attended by high-level dignitaries to include the British Ambassador to Lithuania and Canadian Ambassador to Latvia.
