Name:
John Herrington
Organization where you work:
Field Ops Division, FMX
Years of service at AMCOM:
5.5 years
Before working at AMCOM, where did you work?
ACLC, Fort Bliss, Texas. Prior to that I was a contractor at Kennedy Space Center, Florida and Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio.
What is your job?
FMX Aviation site support for Fort Rucker, Fort Benning and Fort Eustis. I assist where I can on any and all aviation related issues.
What do you like most about your job?
I like to utilize my vast experience in support of any aviation logistics matters, from inception to disposal, and really enjoy the level of involvement at my job.
Did you serve in the military? If yes, for how long and what did you do?
I retired from the USAF with 20 years of Active Duty and I was an Army Brat for 18 years. I started in Aviation Maintenance & Logistics, serving as a crew chief and aircrew member on dignitary and MEDEVAC missions in the U.S. and Europe. During the second half of my career I was fortunate enough to work Acquisition Logistics and Program Management in RDT&E.
What are you usually doing when you're not at work?
I enjoy home projects, recreational shooting and traveling for getaways or to visit relatives.
If you could speak directly to the Soldier you support, what would you say?
I would ask the Soldier if they are confident in their mission readiness and the equipment provided. I would want to garner their readiness for combat. I'm well aware of the issues that the Soldier faces and would like to alleviate their burdens.
What would people be most surprised to learn about you?
People would be surprised to learn about my extensive acquisition and program management backgrounds. They would also probably be surprised to learn I was a firearms instructor for ten years.
Who are your heroes or who has inspired you? Why?
When I was growing up I was always inspired by the senior NCOs around me. I witnessed their ability to make all things happen in my military environment. Their efforts never ceased and their goals were always accomplished at every location my family was stationed. So guess what I became later in life!
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
For anyone that knows me, you'll know that I have not attained that goal of "growing up!" I have enjoyed the vast array of work I have done for the military, so when I do grow up I wish to be a retiree!
What AMCOM means to me:
AMCOM is the long support pole in the tent! AMCOM is the bread and butter of the Acquisition cycle and the rubber is always on the road! This means conducting the full functionality of the products we manage until we park them!
