FORT BENNING, Ga., (March 4, 2015) -- Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Floyd assumed responsibility as the new Fort Benning garrison command sergeant major during a change of responsibility ceremony Feb. 26 at McGinnis-Wickam Hall.

"It's great to be back here at Fort Benning," Floyd said. "My Family and I are really excited about being here. We were never stationed here before, but I've been here several times throughout my career and my Family is in awe of everything Fort Benning and the surrounding community has to offer."

Floyd is the former command sergeant major of the 6th Ranger Training Battalion at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, and is a native of Perkasie, Pennsylvania. Floyd attended one station unit training here and has deployed to Haiti, Kosovo, twice as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and once as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

"Command Sgt. Maj. Floyd brings a wealth of leadership experience to this command, acquired through various Infantry assignments ranging from light Infantry, Airborne, mechanized and Stryker," said Col. Michail Huerter, garrison commander. "(He) has served in every leadership position from team leader, squad leader, mortar platoon sergeant, Bradley platoon sergeant, operations sergeant, first sergeant and his previous position as command sergeant major of the 6th Ranger Training Battalion. It is that unique perspective I'm sure will go a long way in forming his leadership as the garrison command sergeant major, and I look forward to serving with (him) in this garrison command team."

Huerter and Floyd have already identified areas of focus, such as the reception of incoming Soldiers and assisting those who are transitioning into civilian life.

"Every Soldier should come here with a sponsor," Floyd said. "It's our job to make sure they are integrated to the best of our ability into the Fort Benning and surrounding communities. We also need to support the Soldiers who are leaving the Army. The Soldier for Life Center is a great help to Soldiers. We've got to get the word out because Soldiers leaving the Army need the same support as Soldiers arriving here."

Floyd said he encourages any Soldier, Family member, retiree or civilian to reach out to him with any questions or concerns they may have.

"As your garrison command sergeant major, I am here for you," Floyd said. "I can't help you if you don't let me know, so please go on Facebook, access the Interactive Customer Evaluation systems and let me know how I can support you. Let me know what we're doing well and let me know what we're not doing so well, and I will assist you."

Floyd assumed responsibility from Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Sullivan, whose new assignment will be as the command sergeant major of Installation Management Command Atlantic Region, which is headquartered at San Antonio, Texas.

"It's been two years and it feels like we just arrived here at Fort Benning yesterday," Sullivan said. "When I was selected for the garrison job at Fort Benning, I was somewhat concerned. ... I'm here to tell you this has been one of my favorite assignments in a 27-year career. This assignment has been a blessing. I've come to realize that Fort Benning is a well-kept secret and a jewel among installations."

Huerter said during his tenure, Sullivan was a prime example of leadership.

"Command Sgt. Maj. Sullivan is unquestionably one of the most talented and committed senior enlisted advisors with whom I've had the privilege of working with in my career," Huerter said. "He combines an amazing intellectual ability and natural leadership skills with a compelling vision of the future. (He) is an example of what 'right' looks like - confident, mature, highly intelligent, physically fit, hard-working, committed, genuine and motivated to take care of Soldiers and their Families."
