BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan--The 3-401st Army Field Support Battalion recently completed maintenance work on the first group of MRAPs and MRAP recovery vehicles slated to be loaned to Afghan National Security Forces approximately two weeks before the required deadline. That gave the military, civilians and contractors who are executing the mission a jump start on working on the next group of vehicles.
Vehicles slated for loan are brought to a fully mission capable plus safety status and are outfitted with specific items required for the missions of the receiving units. The battalion has given the ANSF vehicle mission priority and has set aside dedicated space and workers to complete the mission.
During his visit to the yard where the vehicles are awaiting movement to the work area on Aug. 28, Maj. Gen. Darrell K. Williams, commanding general for 1st Theater Sustainment Command, was briefed on the status of the mission by Fred Choate, battalion equipment specialist.
Choate pointed out the vehicles that have been identified for the mission and provided a detailed explanation of the work and timelines for completing the work.
The vehicles will be signed for by an ISAF sponsor who then sign them over to ANSF units. Loan of certain types of equipment to foreign forces is authorized under the National Defense Authorization Act for the purposes of personnel protection and survivability.
