FORT BENNING, Ga., (July 16, 2014) -- During home emergencies, four-legged canine and feline Family members are often susceptible to the same pains and life-threatening injuries as humans.
Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center will offer its first pet first aid and CPR training courses from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. July 26 and Aug. 23.
Oxbow Meadows program manager Jan Kent said the courses will focus on CPR, rescue breathing techniques, choking, poisoning, wounds and other pet emergencies. Each course is presented through video, class skill practice, lecture and discussions led by instructors from Southeastern Remote Medical Training.
"There is a difference between the techniques for humans and pets," Kent said.
Dog and cat mannequins will be used for training instead of live animals.
Registration is $50 per person, which includes a pet first aid manual and certification through the American Safety and Health Institute. Certification is valid for two years. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to PAWS Humane in Columbus.
"You do have to retake this (class) every two years to remain certified, but most people are mostly concerned with just knowing what to do," Kent said. "We have gotten some good feedback about the idea and people seem excited."
To register for the course or for more information, call Oxbow Meadows at 706-507-8550. Class size is limited to 10 participants. Teens and adults are welcome. Pre-registration is required. Payment is due at the time of registration.
