JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (July 1, 2014) -- Members of the Mission and Installation Contracting Command are saying farewell this week to one of their own after his almost 31 years of federal service, the last 12 of those as director of contracting at Fort Riley, Kansas.

As director during the last 12 years, David Wild has overseen the award of nearly 23,000 contract actions, including options, valued in excess of $2 billion.

In a message to his staff, the director underscored one of the MICC commanding general's priorities to establish contracting office business leadership.

"Doing so requires critical thinkers capable of making hard operational decisions often requiring choice between poor options," Wild wrote. "(The) MICC has a bunch of mature performers who are more than able to meet the challenge and prove themselves among the best of our profession. Stay engaged and lead on."

In the message on professional development and the critical need to remain relevant to supported installation activities, the MICC-Fort Riley director said that finding solutions to overcome challenges requires a "can do" approach to problem solving by skilled members of the workforce.

"As my federal career draws to a close, I am thankful to have labored alongside each of you as well as many others along the way," Wild said. "I remind you that the director may set the climate, but you drive personal and organizational success. I ask that you take the high road in your personal decisions, interactions and continue the premier support that is our reputation and heritage."

Following his federal career, Wild plans to serve as a principal for a small private school.
