FORT BENNING, Ga., (May 14, 2014) -- Parents of high schoolers at Fort Benning have many options in the Chattahoochee Valley when it comes to enrolling their children in school. To help make the process easier, the Bayonet and Saber will feature information about each of the public high schools in the area over the next 10 weeks. One high school will be presented each week.

Shaw High School

7579 Raider Way, Columbus

• Has approximately 1,200 students enrolled in grades 9-12.

• Mascot is the raider.

• Shaw is home to a mass communications magnet academy with courses in broadcast and print journalism, video production and web design. It has a television broadcast studio and was the first Channel One school in the Muscogee County School District. It also has an award-winning school newspaper.

• Some of Shaw's awards and honors from the 2013-2014 school year include: One Act Play Region champions (State Qualifier), Math Team first place in CSU Tournament. The band, orchestra and chorus all received Superior Rating for Large Group Performance.

• Athletics offered include: Baseball, basketball, cross country, cheerleading, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, track, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.

• Shaw students achieved a 98 percent pass rate and increased their exceeds rate by 5 percent this year on the Georgia High School Graduation Writing Test. Shaw's Partners in Education are TSYS, MediaCom and University of Phoenix.
