The Fort Belvoir Sonic Boom Track Club spent the month of June showcasing its dedication to athletic excellence by competing successfully in two major qualifying meets for the USA Track and Field and Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in Maryland.

Thirty-five Belvoir athletes qualified June 21-23 at Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro, Md. to compete in the AAU National Junior Olympics July 27-Aug. 3 at East Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich. During the previous weekend 31 Sonic Boom team members advanced to the Potomac Valley Association USATF Junior Olympics regional level after competing in a qualifying meet June 14-16 at the Prince Georges Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.

According to Lt. Col. Yvonne Breece, team publicist, Sonic Boom athletes gave stellar performances throughout the event last month.

"We had club record breakers, relay teams and individual athletes advance in each event they competed in (during the USATA meet)," she said. "Some of these athletes took on the challenge to also compete in the AAU Regional level competitions the following weekend."

Following USATA standard format, athletes ages 12 and younger compete in three events. Athletes ages 13 and older have the option of competing in multi-events (Pentathlon, Heptathlon, etc.) and an additional four events, such as standard distance races, hurdles, the long jump and Pentathlon multi-events.
