CAMP HUMPHREYS -- The Lady Baden-Powell International Friendship Award was presented to Girl Scouts from Camp Humphreys and Pyeongtaek, at Chungbuk Elementary School, during an April 26 ceremony.
This award has been around for more than 50 years. The purpose of the LBP award is to foster a friendly and productive long-term relationship between USA Girl Scouts Overseas and the host country World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, as they live together in a country other than the USA.
Leadership is the focus of Girl Scouting and this award recognizes those who work to bring USA Girl Scouts together with their sister host nation WAGGGS organization. These young ladies work together to discover more about themselves and others, connect to define and address a community issue and take action to make a viable impact in the community.
To earn the award, the Scouts worked together on several projects, both at Camp Humphreys and in the Pyeongtaek community. In February, they participated in a "World Thinking Day" event and hiked Buraksan together in March. They also participated together in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in October 2012.
The two Girl Scout groups worked towards earning the award over the past seven months. Following those three activities between the two organizations, a total of 52 awardees, including youth and adults, were presented awards during the ceremony.
Before the main event, Choi Seung-hee, the chairman of the Pyeongtaek Girl Scout Association said this alliance "was a meaningful time to Pyeongtaek Girl Scout members and committee members, by spending times of friendship with the Humphreys Girl Scouts."
Choi presented the certificates to the Korean Girl Scouts, while Lori J. Conkright, wife of Humphreys Garrison Commander Col. Darin S. Conkright, and Command Sgt. Maj. Kristine A. Purnell, Humphreys Garrison command sergeant major, presented the award certificates to the Humphreys Girl Scouts.
