FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (April 2, 2013) -- Fifteen competitors competed for top honors during day two of the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood's 2013 Best Warrior Competition taking place, April 1-5, here.

The purpose of the competition is to identify Fort Leonard Wood's next Drill Sergeant of the Year; along with the Advanced Individual Training Platoon Sergeant of the Year, Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year, Joint Service NCO and Joint Service Member of the Year.

Sgt. 1st Class Adam McQuiston, who won Fort Leonard Wood's Drill Sergeant of the Year competition last year, said that to get to the installation-level competition, each of the service members had to compete and win at their respective battalion and brigade levels.

The post's Best Warrior Competition is very intense, he said.

"It's a lot of late hours, early mornings, and little sleep," McQuiston said.

The competition includes weapons qualification, land navigation, warrior tasks, battle drills and events that test the service member's combat skills, he said.

In addition to the physically demanding tasks, competitors must prove expert familiarity with core values of each branch of military service, Fort Leonard Wood programs and policies, current events and world news, leadership, military justice, salutes, and honors.

The winners of the competition are scheduled to be announced at an award ceremony April 5 in Lincoln Hall Auditorium.
