Mission

U.S. Army South, Sixth Army, enables multidomain operations by identifying, exposing and degrading malign influence, setting the theater, and conducting security cooperation operations and activities in the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility as part of integrated deterrence towards threats to the U.S. homeland. On order, provides a Joint Task Force-capable headquarters to respond to emergent requirements and tasked contingency plans.

Vision Statement

Premier Army Service Component Command that is responsive, adaptive, agile and flexible; rapidly respond to contingencies in the Western Hemisphere, and builds regional capacity, working with our partner nations and other stakeholders to enhance security and defend the U.S. homeland.

Operational Environment

U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility encompasses 31 countries and 15 areas of special sovereignty in Central and South America, and the Caribbean, which covers about 15.6 million square miles. The region represents about one-sixth of the landmass of the world assigned to regional unified commands. Inhabited with nearly 500 million people speaking over 100 languages, there is no other region we depend upon more for our prosperity and security, and with which we are more closely tied through bonds of family, culture, trade, democratic traditions and geographic proximity.
