ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- A computer scientist who deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 was named employee of the year by the U.S. Army's Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center, or CERDEC, here, June 19.

Robert Beckinger, a computer scientist in the Advanced Applications Branch of CERDEC's Command, Power and Integration Directorate, was recognized in the technical team category for his work while deployed to Afghanistan in July 2011 for a three-month tour as a member of the Transformative Applications Support Team. He specializes in the development of application software for handheld devices.

The TA team worked to support the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Transformative Applications program. The program centers on applying rapidly evolving commercial smartphone and digital tablet technology to tactical military problems. Beckinger and the TA team worked directly with Soldiers to both train them and to gain direct feedback about the apps and how they could be improved.

The other members of the Transformative Apps Support Team include Zacharie Hall and Zachary Kjellberg who also deployed to Afghanistan in 2011.
