FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Vacation seekers flocked to the 23rd annual Travel Extravaganza sponsored by Leisure Travel Services at The Landing March 9.

Despite the severe weather, more than 600 Soldiers and Families flooded the event, which had 48 vendors offering military discounts and packages for vacations and weekend getaways.

"We received excellent feedback on this year's extravaganza. We are currently booking spring break," said Kristen Hartwell, Leisure Travel Program Manager "A lot of clients are very interested in Disney specials, so this has helped us a lot by getting the specials to the Soldiers and their Families."

"We are looking into the Georgia Aquarium or anything in the Gulf Coast area for this year's vacation," said Sgt. Zachary Irwin, 1st Battalion, 11th Aviation Regiment. "We went to Walt Disney World last year and booked through Travel Services, they have better deals than anyone"

Vendors from the local area including Landmark Park and the Fort Rucker riding stables handed out information for anyone who might be interested in some local weekend fun. Additionally, multiple hotels and travel experts from Destin, Panama City Beach and Pensacola offered special discounts for those heading to Florida's Emerald Coast.

Spc. Carlos San Miguel, D Company 1st Bn., 13th Avn. Regt. said he was looking to visit hotels in Florida.

"We particularly like the Destin area and I actually just heard of the expo and I wanted to come see what was being offered in that area," he said.

While some attendees were interested in key areas, others attending wanted to learn about all the entertainment options in and around the area.

"I am just here looking around, seeing what is offered," Capt. Christopher Kidder, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Avn. Brigade. "I am hoping something will spark my interest for vacation with my daughter."

WO1 Dallas Garcia, B. Company 1st Bn., 145th Avn. Regt. and his wife Olimpia spoke with Heather Linnell Leisure Services travel clerk about planning a trip to Walt Disney World with their children.

"The travel office and expo have been really helpful and we plan to book our vacation through their office. Not to mention, the discount offered is unbeatable," Garcia said.

During the event, multiple door prizes were handed out to attendees. Many took home overnight stays at hotels around the area and at the beaches, canoe trips, gift bags and goodies such as pens, snacks, T-shirts, bags and other memorabilia.
