K-16 AIR BASE, Republic of Korea - K-16 community members found a new indoor swimming pool ready to dive into Jan. 7.

A $750,000 project to improve quality of life at this air base south of Seoul is now complete, officials said.

"We've been trying to get this for the K-16 community for some time," said Paul Robinson, U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation director. "This is a very nice addition to our facilities."

Robinson said residents will enjoy a five-lane, 20-meter, heated indoor swimming pool with a depth of 9.5 feet in the deep end.

"Both the air and water are heated," Robinson said. "For the summer, the roof will retract."

Robinson said the is a project funded by FMWR. "This is bought and paid for with profits from MWR facilities," he said. "This is the community reinvesting in itself."

K-16 Air Base is home to more than 1,000 U.S. Servicemembers and many Family Members. The base is an enduring installation under the Yongsan Relocation Plan.

The installation is one of nine installations that fall under the management of U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan. USAG-Yongsan officials are working hard to open a commissary on the base.

"In 2008, we made huge strides towards approval of the future K-16 Air Base Commissary," said USAG-Yongsan Commander Col. Dave Hall. "This is a grass-roots effort to support our Family Members in the Seongnam area."

Hall said that community members should look for progress on the commissary issue this year as the Garrison goes after funding.

Robinson also said K-16 residents can expect to see a new multipurpose sports field in 2009.

"We're investing about $3.2 million into a multipurpose field for K-16," he said. "It'll really be first class."

Construction should begin this spring and last for six to eight months. The new field will feature artificial turf, lights, dugouts, new fencing, scoreboard and a four-lane running track around the perimeter.

"We are continuously improving quality of life for the USAG-Yongsan community," Hall said. "As part of the Army Family Covenant, we're committed to providing Soldiers and Families a quality of life commensurate with their service."
