Sgt. Gregory La Fleur, a member of the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was recognized with the Soldier's Medal by Maj. Gen. Clarence K.K. Chinn, Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Special Operations Command during a ceremony held April 14 on the group's compound. La Fleur, a native of Pekin, Illinois, along with Tech Sergeant Nick Bateman, an Airman assigned to Eglin Air Force Base, subdued a service member using a handgun to threaten the safety of families residing in an EAFB housing community. La Fleur and Bateman, disregarding their own safety and numerous errant shots by the gunman, tackled, disarmed and subdued him until base Security Forces arrived.
