FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 15, 2014) -- Five Columbus area veterans, including former Columbus mayor Robert Poydasheff, will be among the 16 inductees into the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame Nov. 1.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. at the St. Luke Ministry Center at 301 11th St. in Columbus. Dress is business casual and tickets are $55.

Last year's class included 18 veterans highlighted by Ranger Ralph Puckett and Marauder Vince Mellillo.

"Everyone who appreciates veterans and wants to thank veterans is encouraged to attend," Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame chairman Paul Longgrear said.

Each year the organization strives to honor 15 veterans for their efforts in three categories: valor, achievement and service, Longgrear said.

In order to be eligible for nomination into the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame, the following criteria must be met:

•Have been born in Georgia, entered military service in Georgia or lived in Georgia for at least 10 years.

•Have served honorably.

•Be of good character.

Also among this year's inductees is retired Master Sgt. Milton Lockett, who is well known for his anticrime efforts in Columbus including neighborhood watches and leading marches against crime, Longgrear said. Lockett was recognized by the Columbus City Council in 2007 for his work as president of Columbus Against Drugs.

Charles "Duke" Doubleday is a civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army. He owns the Hampton Inn Columbus/South-Fort Benning hotel next to the National Infantry Museum and is also those among this year's class of inductees.

While the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame conducts induction ceremonies annually, it strives to serve veterans throughout the year, Longgrear said.

Those wanting to make a donation to the organization are encouraged to visit the organization's website, where they can donate either online with PayPal or by sending a check to the address listed on the website, he said.
