Family, friends and fellow staff members said their official goodbyes to Col. Burton K. Shields, Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region/ U.S. Army Military District of Washington operations branch director during his retirement awards ceremony held at Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall, June 26, 2014.

Shields was presented the Legion of Merit recognizing his 25 years of active service to the United States. The ceremony was hosted by Maj. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, JFHQ-NCR/MDW commanding general.

Speaking during his ceremony Shields informed attendees that he and his family are relocating to the state of Washington, where he plans to attain a graduate degree in education and become a high school math teacher.
