FORT STEWART, Ga. - The Holbrook Pond Recreation Area and campground run by Fort Stewart's Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation is the place to go to help give customers ideas as to what kind of activities they can do in the outdoor environment.
These services are available to active-duty, Reserve, retired and DoD Civilians and their Family Members.
The one service that is being used most by active duty and retirees who are traveling the country is the recreational vehicle park located adjacent to the 20-acre Holbrook Pond.
The campground features 20 recreational vehicle sites that offer concrete slabs, water, dump station and electrical hookups (electric/30/50AMP).
Daily rates are $15 with military identification and $25 for civilians. For the campers who prefer to keep it to the basics, Holbrook also offers 20 primitive camping sites, allowing you to pitch a tent and rough it.
If you don't have the tents or RV's should you need one, Holbrook offers those for rent also.
"With the holiday weekend fast approaching, we expect to be very busy," said Tonia Smith, an FMWR recreational assistant here. "The weekends and holidays are always a busy time for us. Labor Day weekend will be very busy out here. People can make reservations 30 days in advance for camp-sites, and they can stay for up to 90 days."
Camping isn't the only thing to do around the pond.
Holbrook offers boat rentals too. Paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, Jon boats and the latest edition, a Jon boat with a battery operated trolling motor, can be rented for use on the lake.
If you decide to rent the boats for usage on the pond, you will not need a boater's license due to the lifeguard on duty. Motorized boats designed for a variety of uses and a variety of sizes are also available to be taken to the water destination of your choice.
"Boats are available on a first come first serve basis," said Smith. "The boats will go fast this Labor Day weekend. They always do."
And what is boating without fishing'
"Holbrook pond has plenty of catfish," said Dustin Wilson, a recreational assistant and lifeguard for the Holbrook. "You still need a Georgia fishing license and a Fort Stewart permit to fish for ages seven and older."
If fishing is too laid back, there is also something for the adrenaline junkies.
There is paintball for the adrenaline seekers as well as a 50 Bird Skeet and Trap Shoot coming up Aug. 28 at 8 a.m. at the Fort Stewart Skeet and Trap Range. The fee is $25 for skeet or trap or $40 for both.
