WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Oct. 1, 2007) - The October "Soldiers" magazine began Armywide distribution Sept. 24 with changes in its look and contents.
"For months now, a Soldiers Media Center team has been evaluating the magazine and making suggestions, so we've been making gradual changes that most readers would never notice," said Gil High, SMC's print communications director. "There will be more changes coming this year, especially in December."
Readers will notice subtle changes as the publication evolves over the next few months.
"We're changing the design for a better, image-rich product that visually draws the reader in to get more subject information," said Paul Crank, visual information director.
The October issue features a wrap-around cover introducing the new America's Army game, now available for Xbox players. The story also mentions Soldier-hero Sgt. Tommy Rieman, whose likeness was used to model an action figure that further promotes the game.
A series of stories on new technologies focus on Army modernization initiatives. One story tells how virtual-reality technology is being considered for use in therapy of Soldiers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
"Big Changes for Camp Humphreys" provides information on improvements to Soldiers' quality of life, as this once-small installation in Korea becomes a thriving Army community. Then, "Holding Ground at Graf" examines how the Army is improving readiness through training while restoring the environment and protecting endangered species on the Army's northern Bavarian installation.
Reader feedback on the changes is welcome, Mr. High said. "What we're hoping for is to hear what our readers think and want from what is really their publication."
