FORT LEE, Va. (Army News Service, Jan. 31, 2007) - The U.S. Army Women's Museum at Fort Lee, Va., is opening a new exhibit recognizing the contributions of women Soldiers during the war on terror.
The exhibit will open at noon Feb. 3 with an invitation-only event to honor Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester, the first woman awarded the Silver Star for direct combat action, and the nine other members of her military police team, Raven 42.
The exhibit will open to the public Feb. 4.
"We're proud to honor these Soldiers for what they accomplished," said Timothy Hale, Fort Lee media relations officer. "They exhibited extraordinary gallantry under fire, while following the Army's core values that all Soldiers strive to achieve."
In addition to Hester, two other team members received the Silver Star, three were awarded the Bronze Star with Valor device, three received Army Commendation Medals with "V" device and four received Purple Hearts.
The team included two women, a Hispanic Soldier and one African American Soldier, a true reflection of today's Army, Hale said.
The U.S. Army Women's Museum tells the story of women's contributions to the Army since the colonial period. It is the central repository for historical source material pertaining to women in the Army, including thousands of artifacts, photographs, personal papers, books, periodicals and several hundred oral histories.
