CAMP ZAMA, Japan – Each year, all motor vehicle owners in Japan, including members of our U.S. Army in Japan community, must pay their road taxes.

To help explain the process, and answer some of the frequently asked questions, the U.S. Army Garrison Japan Vehicle Registration Office has prepared the following information.

Where can I pay?

To make the process as easy as possible, our Japanese city/prefectural hosts have agreed to host a road tax payment event on Camp Zama. This year’s campaign runs from April 16-18 in the Camp Zama Community Club’s Firelite Lounge. Please ensure you attend that event to pay your road taxes. This is the easiest way to make the mandatory payment for all types of vehicles in one location. (See the flyer below for full details).

Can my family member pay for me?

A family member may pay road taxes at the on-post event for their sponsor/spouse/dependent as long as they have the following: previous year’s tax receipt; vehicle title (shaken); and a completed Form 4 “Statement of Automobile Tax” for white-plated vehicles.

What if I miss the on-post event?

If you are unable to attend the Camp Zama event, you’ll have to pay your taxes off-post at a government office depending on where you live and what sort of vehicle you have.

If you own multiple vehicles with different engine sizes and plates – a white-plated van and a motorcycle, for example – you will need to pay taxes at separate offices.

All white-plated vehicles (except motorcycles) are paid at the Kanagawa Prefectural Office. All yellow-plated vehicles and motorcycles must be paid at your local city government office depending on where you live.

You must have the exact amount of your payment in cash.

Where are the off-post offices?

** Kanagawa Prefecture Office: For all residents of Camp Zama and Sagamihara Family Housing Area and any off-post residences within Kanagawa Prefecture for all white-plated vehicles (except for motorcycles). Address: 6-Chome-3-1 Sagamiono, Minami Ward, Sagamihara, Kanagawa 252-0303. Open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. on first floor, window No. 2.

** Sagamihara-Minami City Hall: For Sagamihara Family Housing Area residents or residents of the off-post Sagamihara Minami-ward for all motorcycles and yellow-plated vehicles. Address: 5-Chome 31-1 Sagamiono, Minami Ward, Sagamihara, Kanagawa 252-0303. Open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

** Zama City Hall: For Camp Zama residents and off-post Zama City residents only for all motorcycles and yellow-plated vehicles. Address: 1 Chome 1-1 Midorigaoka, Zama, Kanagawa 252-8566. Open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. on the second floor, window No. 10.

NOTE: If you do not live on Camp Zama or the Sagamihara Family Housing Area, you will pay road taxes for motorcycles and yellow-plated vehicles at your local city office in whichever city jurisdiction you live in. If you do not live in Kanagawa Prefecture, then you will need to pay for your white-plated vehicles at the relevant prefectural office. Call the Vehicle Registration Office if you have questions about which office(s) you need to visit.

How much are road taxes?

IMPORTANT: You must have the exact amount of your payment in cash. You cannot pay with debit/credit card.

Trucks (White Sagami 1xxYxxxx Plates) - 32,000 yen

Cars/Vans (White Sagami 3xxYxxxx Plates) - 22,000 yen (engine size 4.5 liter or above) or 19,000 yen (engine size up to 4.4 liter)

I paid – what’s next?

If you pay your road tax during the on-post event, you’ll immediately receive a U.S. Forces Japan 2024 decal for each vehicle. Place those decals on your windshield per Vehicle Registration Office instruction.

If you pay at an off-post government office, you must visit the Camp Zama Vehicle Registration Office at Gate 1. You must provide your payment receipt in order to receive your USFJ 2024 decal.

Anyone who hasn’t paid their road taxes and received/displayed the 2024 decal by June 1 will be ticketed for failure to pay the tax.

I have more questions – who can I ask?
