ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- An engineer who deployed to Afghanistan was named employee of the year by the U.S. Army's Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center, or CERDEC, here, June 19.
Zacharie Hall was recognized in the technical team category for his work while deployed to Afghanistan in May 2011 for a three-month tour as a member of the Transformative Applications Team. He serves as a computer scientist in the Advanced Applications Branch of CERDEC'S Command, Power & Integration Directorate. He specializes in the application of smartphone and handheld technology to battlefield systems. While in Afghanistan, Hall helped establish the team's relationship and work environment at the Afghanistan Combat Outpost in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar.
The TA team worked to support the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Transformative Applications program. The program centers on applying rapidly evolving commercial smartphone and digital tablet technology to tactical military problems. Hall and the TA team worked directly with Soldiers to both train them to use the applications and to gain direct feedback about the apps and how they could be improved.
The other members of the Transformative Apps Support Team include Robert Beckinger and Zachary Kjellberg who both also deployed to Afghanistan in 2011.
