The Columbus Roadrunners and Fort Benning will host a new race, the Soldier Half and Full Marathon, Nov. 13 to benefit the National Infantry Museum, House of Heroes and Honor Flight.
Cecil Cheves, race director and member of the Columbus Roadrunners, said giving the proceeds to military organizations seemed fitting.
"This is a tribute to the Soldiers and how much we appreciate them," Cheves said. "They sacrifice so much for our country. They are in harm's way and they give so much of themselves to serve others."
The marathon is 26.2 miles and the half marathon is 13.1 miles. The course will begin at the National Infantry Museum and wind through Fort Benning by historic monuments, including the old Infantry Museum, then proceed to the Columbus Riverwalk, located near the Chattahoochee River, and make their way back through Fort Benning to the finish line at the National Infantry Museum.
"We hope to make this a yearly event," Cheves said. "I really think this could be a popular event."
For the inaugural year, Cheves said he is hoping to attract 300 to 400 runners.
Runners ages 12 and older can run in the half marathon, while the minimum age for the full marathon is 18.
The groups will be divided into five-year increments from ages 12-75. The top three finishers in each age category will receive trophies. Everyone who finishes the race will receive a medal and T-shirt.
If you register before Nov. 1, the cost is $55 for civilians for the half marathon and $65 for the full marathon. Military ID cardholders get a discount - $35 for the half and $50 for the full marathon. All prices increase by $10 after Nov. 1. On the day of the event, the cost is $85 for either event. Teams of two to five can register for $150. The race will begin at 8 a.m.
