FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas -- Staff Sgt. Edmund Perez was awarded the Department of the Army's Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers President of the Year award during the annual BOSS conference in Leesburg, Va. Aug. 11.
"I am very honored to have received this award," said Perez, who has been the Fort Sam Houston BOSS president for one year. Perez was previously the BOSS president for Camp Nimble, B Company, 702nd Maintenance Support Battalion in Korea.
"This was an awesome surprise. I am very grateful to all those who have guided me for the past year and hope to have their continued support," Perez said.
"I am pleased that Staff Sgt. Perez was selected," said Garrison Command Sergeant Major Raymond Houston.
"BOSS is a program that supports our single Soldiers and our Joint military members by providing assistance to any concerns they have reference to the billets, and providing ways they can display camaraderie and engage in activities promoting their well-being. Col. (Mary) Garr and I are very pleased with the efforts of all the unit BOSS reps and leadership," Houston said.
Perez said he is planning quarterly tours of the city San Antonio for Soldiers and others interested in learning and exploring his home town as respite for those new or unfamiliar with the area during his tenure as BOSS president at FSH.
"There's a plethora of things to do," Perez said.
He also supports the BOSS partnership with the I. AM. STRONG program aimed at educating soldiers about sexual harassment.
"It further enhances a unit's cohesion," Perez said. "It's modern, up-to-date. There's no better way to get Soldiers to relate than through music and videos of actual Soldiers, not actors.
"We're zeroing in on quality of life issues with the campaign," said Sgt. Danielle Colson, DA BOSS president. "The partnership will raise awareness of the number one reported incident among Soldiers. We're ensuring Soldiers know they can report and how to report."
