The Alexis St. Martin Dining Facility at William Beaumont Army Medical Center was filled with holiday notes and chorus as Soldiers, staff and Families observed the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, Dec. 1.

The ceremony welcomed WBAMC Soldiers, staff, and families, to enjoy camaraderie and remember WBAMC Soldiers currently deployed.

During the ceremony, entertainment was provided with holiday-themed music and performances by the Terrace Hills Middle School Choir, a WBAMC Partners in Education (PIE) sponsored school.

"This is a great opportunity for us to pause for a moment, think back at what we've all accomplished," said Col. John A. Smyrski III, commander, WBAMC. "It's also a great opportunity for us to reflect on what we have in our lives and appreciate what we have as an organization and as a nation."

After the lighting of the tree, Terrace Hills Middle School students were invited up to decorate the holiday tree with 20 ornaments, each bearing the name of a deployed WBAMC Soldier.

"We take families very seriously, and we understand that those members of our family who are deployed have an extra frustration and worry being away," said Lt. Col. Knapp, commander, Troop Command, WBAMC. "Many of us in the room have combat patches on our shoulders and we know how difficult this time of year is."

In addition to honoring deployed Soldiers during the ceremony, Troop Command's Family Readiness Group also mailed care packages downrange to provide necessities and extra comforts to the Soldiers during this time of the year. Items for the care packages were donated by WBAMC staff members.

"It's tremendously important that we reach out to those Soldiers," said Knapp.

Once the holiday tree was full and lit, and a few sing-a-longs later, special guest, "Santa Claus," ushered in to greet children of all ages and allow for photo opportunities.
