United States Army Garrison Daegu Employees gathered November 16, at the Civilian Human Resources Agency training room at Camp Henry to present the second year of the training program "Emerging Leaders Creating Unity by Engagement".

"Start competing, although this is not competition!" said Stephens. The group was welcomed by United States Army Garrison Daegu Commander Col. Ted Stephens. "So, you've got a trusted agent here, Ms. Walsh Brown and her collective team that is going to facilitate the efforts. They are really some top-notch people. I hope you feel stronger as a leader when you finish this program with nine months from now."

ELCUBE is a nine-month program that is comprised of one capstone garrison project that has been designed to facilitate achievement of the program's stated objectives. It was formed by a multi-disciplined team charged with developing and implementing USAG Daegu's first ever leadership course for 2nd tier leaders.

There are three quarters of course learning objectives. The first quarter is "Importance of building trust and leading others when working effectively as leaders within high performance teams, the second is "Leading by example and extending influence increases commitment and fosters high performance teams, and the third is "How communication impacts effective leadership within high performance teams".

After Stephens' remarks, Director of Human Resources Ingrid Walsh-Brown stated opening remarks, and then participants started to introduce themselves to work groups, mentors, and facilitators.

At 9:30 am, Equal Employment Office Specialist Kelvin Roberts gave a lecture about "True Colors". True Colors is an easy, entertaining, user friendly way to identify people's spectrum of personality preferences by using four colors such as orange, gold, blue, and green.

Orange commands attention. It represents vitality, risk taking and action. Gold is responsible, faithful and loyal with a strong commitment to family and service to others. It represents stability, accountability, and practical sensibility. Blue represents sensitivity, empathy, tranquility, and depth of felling. It is energized by relationships with others. Green represents visioning, creating, and always striving or perfection. It is energized by knowledge, ideas and competence.

With the help of the True Colors personality process, ELCUBE members had a chance not only to begin to see themselves and others in a new light, but also to improve relationships that will lead to new successes at home, at work, and in life.

"I'm so surprised at the result that I'm a blue person because before taking the test, I'm sure that I am a gold person" said Seo, Bo-Myung, Public Affairs Office Intern. She added that the class of True Colors was very helpful to know about her true personality that she even didn't realize and understand others' personality as well. All participants felt excited and enjoyed it.

What is more, participants divided into working teams and each group was assigned a Senior Mentor and Mentors. Members had lots of opportunities to communicate each other and participate in the preparation and distribution of a team or personal presentation on many tasks the lecturer gave.

The purpose of the ELCUBE is to prepare emerging leaders and improve their knowledge of effective leadership skills and organizational culture. This course employs group modality, a blended learning approach and guided discussions to concentrate on organizational, indirect leadership that will enable Army Civilians to enhance and achieve leadership goals.

There is a saying by Jack Welch "Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others." That's why ELCUBE is so significant. Building leadership is heavily dependent upon personal ability to communicate effectively with others, and influences team members. Therefore, ELCUBE has tried to enhance individual leadership competencies, and inspire vision and leverage creativity in organization.

The second quarter will be on 15 February 2017. The two teams will participate in the preparation and delivery of a team presentation on the capstone project. The theme will focus on line of efforts which will address challenges here at USAG Daegu. Other noted changes, the ELCUBE will have offsite visits when providing training classes. Additional time will also be built in for team planning and project research.

After finishing three quarters, the ELCUBE members will be able to manage organizational resources to successfully complete a group project. It means they will find keys to understand the importance of building trust and leading others and enhance relationships as well. Consequently, they will be a good and successful leader.
