LTC Richard Unda, the commander of the 1st Battalion, 329th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade, rolled up and cased the battalion's colors at a change of authority ceremony Tuesday at Kanell Field.
Of the more than 100 Soldiers in the unit, 38 will demobilize and return home. The rest have volunteered to stay at Fort Benning with the new command, the 1st Bn., 330th Inf. Regt., from Fort Wayne, Ind., which is attached to the 198th Inf. Bde.
The 1st Bn., 329th Inf. Regt., assigned to Fort Benning in March 2008, completed 13 training cycles, including one station unit training, split operations and basic combat training, and graduated more than 2,600 Soldiers. The 1st Bn., 329th Inf. Regt., will return to its headquarters in Bloomington, Ind.
Their efforts ensured Soldiers were prepared to deploy and fight in the Global War on Terrorism, said COL Daniel Kessler, commander of the 198th Inf. Bde.
"Their dedication and excellence and detail to training Infantrymen will have a lasting impact on our Army for many years to come," he said.
LTC David Tate, commander of the 1st Bn., 330th Inf. Regt., said the battalion looks forward to supporting the brigade's wartime mission.
"We accept the challenge of establishing a safe environment that adheres to Army standards," he said. "These young Soldiers are part of the Army Family and we will ensure these future Infantrymen will be able to meet the challenges the future holds.
The 1st Bn., 330th Inf. Regt., which includes five companies, will begin their first cycle Friday.
