YONGIN, South Korea - Over 75 service members from the 2501st Digital Liaison Detachment, students from Seoul American Middle and High Schools and cadets from Yongin University ROTC participated in an area beautification project in Yongin Saturday Apr. 9.
The group assembled together for a community outreach clean-up along the Yongin River, which runs through downtown Yongin.
"Community outreach is essential to our mission as we continue to build relationships, earn trust, and establish credibility with our ROK partners," said Col. Jamal E. Wigglesworth, commander of the 2501st DLD.
This is just one of many partnership projects between the 2501st DLD, the Yongin University ROTC and the city of Yongin that is intended to show pride in the community.
"To be able to contribute to the local community and partner with the Yongin University ROTC department is an honor. We look forward to doing more outreach events like this and getting to know our neighbors, in the future," said Wigglesworth.
Following the event, the group enjoyed a brief tour of Yongin University and visited the Samsung Innovation Museum enhancing cultural awareness.
"Thank you for 2501st DLD's warm heart, who always participate in the local community. I'm sure that ROK-US relations will be stronger by doing these small things together, said Lt. Col. Kim Sun-taek, detachment commander of Yongin University ROTC.
Other members of the military community commented on the importance of building relationships between the military, ROK, and the local community.
"It was great today to see everyone interacting, laughing, and communicating. This event was the start of other great things to come," said Master Sgt. Kenneth Smith, the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) of Camp Yongin.
Maj. Paul Haney, the Officer in Charge (OIC) of Camp Yongin commented that events such as this show that the military is part of the community, not a separate entity.
The mission of the 2501st DLD is to provide continuous liaison capability between Eighth Army and First Republic of Korea/ Third Republic of Korea headquarters to enable mutual understanding and unity of effort through coordination, information exchanges, and the integration of war-fighting capabilities.
