WASHINGTON (March 24, 2015) -- Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani honored America's military by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery during his visit to the United States this week.
Ghani was escorted by Maj. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, the Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region and U.S. Army Military District of Washington commanding general, during the Armed Forces Full Honor Wreath Laying Ceremony. Also participating were Afghanistan's Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter.
In the Pentagon yesterday, Ghani thanked America's military, their families, DoD civilians and contractors for their service to his country during the past 13 years of war.
This is President Ghani's first visit to Washington since his election last year and he is meeting with U.S. officials to discuss the future details of the U.S. and Afghanistan relationship.
According to a State Department press release, the United States and Afghanistan signed a Bilateral Security Agreement last year allowing the United States to continue after 2014 to train, advise and assist Afghan National Security Forces in their ongoing mission to prevent terrorists from threatening Afghanistan, the region and the world from Afghan soil.
