To begin St. Patrick's Day weekend, the circumstances were fitting that the co-ed race winners of the 2013 Shamrock Shuffle 5K road race were of Irish descent and a little green behind the ears.

The 2013 Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall 5K run/1-mile walk race schedule commenced March 15, and a newcomer to the JBM-HH race circuit and a veteran runner named Galvin dominated the course.

"I usually run about 17 minutes, but I haven't competed for about two years. This is just an introduction back into racing," said the top overall female, Baillie Locke, who cruised to the finish in 21 minutes and 15 seconds. "I run every morning, but I've never raced [at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall]."

Joe Galvin's Shamrock Shuffle winning time of 17 minutes and 16 seconds was a training session for one of the biggest races in the northeast which will find the Pentagon employee heading to marathon in Beantown.

"I'm not use to doing these sprints since I'm training for the Boston Marathon," Galvin said. "Probably in about two weeks, I start winding [my training down] and start doing just longer runs."

Joining runners at the Fort Myer Fitness Center start-finish lines were JBM-HH Command Sgt. Maj. Earlene Y. Lavender, Headquarters Command Battalion's Lt. Col. Mark Biehl, HQ Bn. Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Jessup and Rader Clinic Commander Lt. Col. Laura Trinkle.

Age division winners were Daniel Vtipil, Andrew Aleers, Tamoris Gordon, Terrell Moorer, Robert Bockles, Rashad Simpson, Tracy Darrensbourg, Michael Creadon, Bob Grimm, Brenda Trosset, Monica Mendoza, Eleanor Bowling, Star Demery, Yuko Whitestone, Sandra Porta and Vanessa Wiggins.

The top 1K walkers were Michael Muir at 14:01 and Captoria Fitzgerald at 13:39.

The largest military unit taking part in the 2013 shuffle was the 529th Regimental Support Company.
