Redstone Arsenal, Ala. --Executive Deputy to the Commanding General of U.S. Army Materiel Command John B. Nerger kicked off the Combined Federal Campaign Charity Fair here, Nov. 5.
The Combined Federal Campaign is an annual fundraiser conducted throughout the military every fall. CFC's mission is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee-focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing federal employees the opportunity to improve quality of life for all.
Recounting the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy on the northeast, Nerger reminded the crowd that hardships can come at anytime.
"Sandy is just a reminder, it's not a question of if we'll need that kind of help someday, it's a matter of when," said Nerger.
Nerger explained that many of the various organizations working to assist the coast have been long time participants of CFC. He added that those same organizations don't just address major disasters but also provide daily support to thousands of families, neighbors and friends.
"Certainly the people of Alabama know after the tornadoes of last year...it's not just spirit that gets you through a disaster but organizations…just as they are there for us, we need to be there for them…we are pleased to be a part of another season of giving."
AMC employees learned firsthand from the more than 44 local and national charities present how their donations can make a difference to someone in need.
Marsetta M. Bearden, AMC CFC Coordinator, shared why the fair is so important to the success of CFC.
"This fair exposes our workforce to charities we didn't even know existed…it provides information for the workforce to make informed decisions for their donations," said Bearden.
Enjoying light refreshments and musical entertainment from the AMC Band, the CFC fair educated AMC employees on how even the smallest contribution can make an enormous impact in someone's life.
