FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. -- Steak, shrimp, baked potatoes and ice cream were on the menu at the Fort Hunter Liggett dining facility for a lunchtime feast to help celebrate another birthday for the United States Army - 237 years of Soldiers offering to give their all for their country, and still going strong.
On June 13, a contingent from Fort Hunter Liggett went to King City, Fort Hunter Liggett's nearest neighbor, for Military Appreciation Night at the farmer's market. The event thanked the Army for 237 years of service to our nation - and also served to strengthen Fort Hunter Liggett's Army Community Covenant with the city.
Birthday festivities June 14 began with a bike-run-walk at 7 a.m. Beginning near the front gate, the route went over the big hill at the Hacienda Milpitas, down and back on Sulphur Springs Road. The celebration continued with an awesome lunch served to Soldiers in the dining facility by Hunter Liggett's top leaders, followed by a ceremonial cake-cutting, complete with saber.
Brig. Gen. James Cook, commander of Fort Hunter Liggett's 91st Division, and his Command Sgt. Maj. Gregory Chatman, joined Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Newman to cut and serve the cake.
To complete the day's activities, kids from the Children, Youth and Student Services program stopped by to deliver birthday cards to Soldiers and have some ice cream. On Friday, June 15, Col. James Suriano, Fort Hunter Liggett's garrison commander, wrapped up the week's observances by reading the 237th Army Birthday Story to the CYSS children during an outing to Bradley Park in the family housing area.
