FORT LEE, Va. -- To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee will unveil a new exhibit, entitled, "A War of Supply: The Quartermaster Department in the Civil War."
The role of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Department during the Civil War was paramount. This "Army behind the Army" provided logistical support never before seen in war. The ability to clothe, transport, and sustain large field armies over the course of four years was crucial to Union victory however, success did not come easy. This exhibit reveals how the Quartermaster Department overcame significant challenges to create an effective organization that reinforced the importance of supply on the battlefield.
Artifacts from the museum's extensive collection will be on display, some never before seen by the public. The exhibit will officially open to the public April 10, 1:30 p.m. It will be at the museum for one year. The museum will also highlight its iconic Civil War items to include General Ulysses S. Grant's saddle, a wagon ambulance, rare uniforms, weapons and equipment.
In addition, technology and social media will be put to good use within the exhibit to further highlight the importance of the Quartermaster story during the Civil War. Visitors will also have a chance to "try on" history and take pictures in a mock-up Civil War studio.
"The role of the Quartermaster Department in the Civil War is often overlooked," said Paul Morando, museum director. "This exhibit focuses on how crucial supply and logistics were in achieving victory in battle.
"Showcasing key artifacts, along with informative signage, allows visitors to appreciate the rich history of the Quartermaster and how challenging it was for the Army to keep the supply line in operation," he added.
