SEASIDE, Calif. - More than 3,000 adventurous runners congregated for one of the Monterey Peninsulas best loved, and most muddy of local sporting events as the 2012 Big Sur Mud Run was held March 24 at the campus of CSU Monterey Bay which is situated on lands once occupied by the Army's former Fort Ord.
Volunteers from the Presidio's 229th Military Intelligence Battalion and Marine Corps Detachment could be heard all along the 5-mile course barking orders, keeping racers on course and motivating participants along the way. Military volunteers also helped set-up the course as well as encouraged runners through mud pits and over 5-foot walls. The volunteers manned various exercise stations in which participants were required to perform pushups, squats and more.
For those who were not busy volunteering, some military members also chose to compete in this year's run including Presidio Garrison Commander Col. Joel Clark, who participated in the individual portion of the race. Clark addressed the crowd prior to the start of the event encouraging runners with the reminder that "pain is just weakness leaving the body."
Out of more than 300 5-person teams that ran, 33 were registered in the Military Division. The Presidio's Marine Corps Detachment Male Run Team took first place for Military Teams and turned in the best overall team time for the race, edging out the second place Male Presidio Army team by one minute. Teams are required to cross the finish line arm-in-arm.
Overall winners for the individual event were Eric Palmer of Marina for the men and Piper Delaney of Marina for the women.
Cold showers were provided after the race by a Presidio of Monterey fire truck. The event was co-sponsored by the Big Sur International Marathon, Presidio's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, CSU Monterey Bay, ASICS, MarathonFoto, and Granite Construction, which dug the mud pits.
This is the seventh year for the race and was coordinated by race director and retired Marine Wally Kastner in partnership with race sponsors. Proceeds were donated to various community athletic programs.
