YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- Recent incidents of theft on U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan has prompted leadership to remind the Community of a simple, yet powerful message: Lock your doors.
"I ask that the Yongsan Community remain vigilant in locking their doors in homes and vehicles and securing all windows," said Col. William Huber, garrison commander for U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan. "According to the Military Police investigations, the thefts occurred in unsecured and unattended locations. Everyone can be assured that we live in a safe Community, but we must all maintain a sense of security when it comes to locking our homes and securing our belongings."
Securing your home is just one step you can take in crime prevention. Here are some reminders on how to protect your home, vehicle, property and yourself:
1. Make sure the locks on your doors and windows are secure.
2. You should remove chairs, garbage cans, tables, and any other object that can be used by criminals to reach windows and other access points to your residence.
3. Keep your exterior lights on at night to deter crime around your home.
4. Check around the outside of your home or apartment building. You should do this regularly to make sure that no one has tampered with your screens, windows, or doors.
5. Do not leave valuables within sight from the outside of your home through windows or doors. They can be grabbed quickly if robbers know what they want and where to get it.
6. Make an inventory of personal property and include serial numbers for items and physical descriptions.
7. Do not hide extra keys outside of your home. Give copies of keys to a trusted neighbor or a friend.
8. Never leave your car running or unattended.
9. Always roll up your windows and lock the car, even if it is parked in front of your home.
10. Never leave valuables in plain view inside your car even if it's locked. Keep them out of sight.
