Three delegates from Saint-Avold, France concluded their week visiting nearby Fayetteville, N.C. with a tour of Fort Bragg and U.S. Army Forces Command headquarters. Fayetteville and St. Avold have been sister cities since 1993. The city's relationship with France goes back to 1825 when the Marquis de Lafayette visited his namesake American city. A bronze bust of the French war hero is in City Hall's lobby. A group of residents and elected officials from both cities usually visit one another every few years. They exchange gifts and stay with host families. St. Avold, home to about 18,000 residents, has U.S. military connections. Just north of town is the Lorraine National Cemetery, where about 10,500 American servicemen from World War II are buried. And the city is about an hour's drive to a U.S. Air Force base.
