The Provost Marshal/Protection Directorate (PM/PD) of the Joint Force Headquarters-National Capitol Region/Military District of Washington (JFHQ-NCR/MDW) won the 2011 International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)/DynCorp International Civilian Law Enforcement-Military Cooperation Award.
The award recognizes excellence in law enforcement cooperation between civilian and military law enforcement agencies for innovative joint efforts that lead to improvement in public safety for both military and civilian communities. An official presentation will be made Oct. 23 at the IACP's 118th Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
"The key factor in the command's success is the consistent effort to stay in touch with our interagency partners. When there is a crisis, personally knowing who to call for assistance as well as knowing what type of support is available to you is of paramount importance and it is that effort, to stay in touch with each other that really is highlighted by this award," said Arnie Claudio, JFHQ-NCR/MDW joint interagency coordinator. "The National Capital Region is the model for how domestic security is done in the United States."
Over the past year, JFHQ-NCR/MDW worked and trained closely with its numerous inter-agency law enforcement partners in the National Capital Region (NCR) as part of a Mil-Civ team focused on protecting both military and civilian personnel and public officials. Some of those partners include the FBI Washington Field Office, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police, U.S. Capitol Police, Metropolitan Police Dept., D.C. and the Special Operations Division, Pentagon Police Dept. as well as almost most local and state law enforcement agencies in the region at one time or another throughout the year.
Cooperative events worked in the NCR include the State of the Union Address, The U.S. Army Band concert with the Peoples Liberation Army (China) Band Concerts and the Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknowns - Arlington National Cemetery.
The NCR serves as the seat of the U.S. government and is home to most senior civilian and military leaders and historic national icons. It is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States; home to more than 5 million residents and 20 million tourists annually. It has the second largest public transit system, more than 2,000 non-profits and international non-government organizations, produces a Gross Regional Product of $228 billion annually, and home to more than 230 individual Federal departments and agencies representing all three branches of government.
According to a letter from the IACP announcing the award, JFHQ-NCR/MDW displayed an outstanding example of civilian and military public safety cooperation.
"The MDW PMO is unique in many ways," said Claudio. "As you study the missions they lead regarding National Security Special Events in the NCR you will find that no other Army or DoD law enforcement component in the continental U.S. has such unique operational roles."
