FORT SILL, Okla. (Aug. 18, 2011) -- Fort Sill's golf learning center is now open which makes the post the first Army installation with one of these facilities.

The converted tennis courts are now a simulated course to provide golfers of all ages a free place to practice golf or perfect their swing. The golf course and youth services will co-run the center, allowing it to be a useful resource for junior golfers or those just learning the game.

Ernie Altic, Fort Sill Golf Course manager and golf pro, said the center isn't just for veteran golfers. "We anticipate programming for the golf learning center including lesson packages, which incorporate instruction of the fundamentals for all ages and golf camps in conjunction with youth services."

The learning center is next to the future youth center and will be one of the programs offered to youths who might not otherwise learn to golf. It is a great way to get them involved and enjoying it for a lifetime, said Altic.

"Long-range plans are to continue developing programming to assist in providing family members an additional outlet to learn new life skills and values resulting in a more resilient individual and family member."

"We believe this facility is an excellent resource for golfers of all skill levels to improve their game by practicing the fundamentals of golf. Patrons can perfect their swing mechanics, chipping and putting abilities all in one location," said Michael Borden, business operations division chief.

The five swing stations allow patrons to improve their swing mechanics at full speed. The putting area allows patrons to improve their abilities to read putts. All five holes in the putting area help patrons determine subtle breaks in the anticipated path of the putt. The chipping area provides golfers a place to develop feel between the differences of hitting from sand or from rough.
