FORT MONROE, Va. (June 14, 2011) - Maj. Gen. Rita Broadway, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command deputy commanding general for the U.S. Army Reserve, retired after 35 years of service to our nation and almost three years as the TRADOC deputy for USAR during a ceremony this morning at the Morelli Auditorium at Fort Monroe, Va.
"When I started in ROTC, I didn't have a plan, but I knew I liked what I was doing. I knew I loved the challenge, I loved the training, I knew I loved the people and I knew I loved the opportunity to serve my country," said Broadway.
"We've done some great work together . and you've helped me balance the Army Reserve and the TRADOC interests into something unique and very forward," she said about her time at TRADOC. "Thank you all for honoring me today."
Ceremony host, Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of TRADOC, talked about Broadway's instinct for leader development and forward thinking that aligned with the future and direction of the Army.
"Her command of the 561st Corps Support Group marked a major turnaround for that organization . and there certainly wasn't any brow-beating or micromanaging," he said. "She set attainable goals, resourced her Soldiers to achieve and took care of them. Her leadership style could be seen as an early precursor to what we now call Mission Command."
During the ceremony, Broadway was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and Garan, her husband, was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Award. A Wichita, Kan. native, Broadway was the first female cadet to receive an Army ROTC commission from Kansas State University in 1976. She has also served in many areas of Reserve affairs including personnel, intelligence, operations, logistics and budget. After retirement, Broadway will continue her civilian career as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, U.S. Army Reserve Command.
