Saber Squadron joins new formation in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Soldiers of 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division uncased its colors in a ceremony to signify the beginning of its mission in Iraq Feb. 23.

"It is a distinct privilege to mark the beginning of the squadron's advise and assist operations in Iraq with this uncasing ceremony," said Lt. Col. Cameron Cantlon, commander, 6th Sqdn., 9th Cav. Regt, a native of Ettrick, Wis.

The 6th Sqdn., 9th Cav. Regt. deployed from Fort Hood, Texas on Jan. 30. After spending two weeks in Kuwait finishing months of preparation and training for the deployment, the main elements of the squadron arrived in Baghdad on Feb. 15.

Currently, the squadron is deployed to Camp Liberty, Iraq under the tactical control of 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Infantry Division., United States Division-Central.

"We are officially back in the fight, and we are prepared to accomplish our mission in whichever area we are required," said Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Burnette, the squadron's command sergeant major, a native of Anderson, S.C.

The squadron's mission is to serve in the pivotal role as the United States Forces - Iraq reserve unit; a mission that has kept the squadron busy since its arrival.

"Saber Squadron honors the troopers who have served in previous deployments in Iraq by completing this mission as part of Operation New Dawn with professionalism and discipline," said Cantlon.

The squadron is currently scheduled for a mission that will require them to serve in many facets of the United States forces drawdown. Regardless of what tasks lay ahead, the squadron is prepared to successfully accomplish its mission.
