Again this year Red River Army Depot members dug into their pockets and contributed to the community wide Toys for Tots campaign. Bicycles, dolls, trucks, drums and tea sets (just to name a few) filled trucks, trailers and HMMWVs on their trek to the Texarkana Carson Marine Corps Reserve Center.

The cold damp day didn\'t stop workers from loading the toys and enjoying the holiday spirit. Once everything was loaded, folks visited with the Marines and warmed themselves with refreshments provided by Public Works, Equipment Division, Mechanical Branch personnel.

Mary Jayne Locke, depot coordinator, recalls that this is her 22nd year to see the generosity of the depot. She says that giving is a big part of the Red River way.

"There will be many children in the area that will have a good Christmas this year who otherwise would not have. Red River personnel always open their hearts and give to others," said Locke.

A preliminary count revealed at least 300 bicycles and approximately 700 toys. The Marines also collected more than $1400 in donations from depot members. In conjunction with the toy drive, the depot also sponsored a food drive to support area community food banks. More than 4800 food items were collected for distribution to local food centers.

"Red River Army Depot is always one of the largest contributors in the area and we greatly appreciate their support," said Marine Sgt. Aaron Montalvo, drive coordinator.

Since it began in 1947, Toys for Tots has distributed more than 400 million toys to more than 188 million needy children nationwide.
