PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - In a battle of the ages, two teams dueled it out in a friendly game of softball here today.
Active duty military members known as "Team Picatinny" battled against, "The Boys of Summer," the 2007 world champions of the over-60 league.
Yogi Berra, the legendary baseball hall of famer, could not make it to the game, however, his son Larry attended and played.
Lt. Gen. William N. Phillips, former Picatinny Arsenal commanding general, was also in attendance and presented the younger Berra with a plaque honoring his father for his heroic military service during World War II.
Berra was drafted into the Navy and served on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day. However, he rarely speaks of his military service.
Berra is best known playing with the New York Yankees and is the only ball player to ever win 10 world championships.
"My father would be honored to have been here today, and he would have been honored to receive this award," Berra said.
Phillips is currently serving as Principle Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology at the Pentagon.
The Boys of Summer took home the victory with an 11-7 win over Team Picatinny.
Brig. Gen. Jonathan A. Maddux, Picatinny's current commanding general thanked all who attended and said that he would like to make this an annual event.
Proceeds from the event support Picatinny's Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation branch as well as the Picatinny Military Unit Fund.
